Take Out
"The fried, battered cauliflower wings tossed in maple sriracha at Very Good Butchers might be the single tastiest vegetarian appetizer I had in 2019. Washing down my Very Good Burger – featuring a spicy, BBQ-flavoured bean patty – with peach mint kombucha made this a lunch to remember. You can also devour a seitan bacon (made with gluten) and deli fowl (chicken flavour without actual chicken) charcuterie board at this hotspot in the bustling Victoria Public Market on Douglas Street."
"Vegetarian and vegan food was once hard to find but now everyone wants to eat more vegetables and cut back on meat. Owners James Davison and Tania Friesen opened this shop in February 2017 and it’s so that good meat eaters are flocking here to try plant-based dishes like vegan poutine, burgers with flax mayo and house made “cheez.”. I loved the jackfruit “ribs” and even the rice paper bacon but the tempeh bacon was a tough sell."
"Making their own excellent plant-based 'meats', The Very Good Butchers are definitely worth a visit. Despite the name, everything is vegan. You can buy burgers and sausages from their store counter, or stop by their restaurant for a BLT or burger."
"If you’re feeling sporty, why not start your day off on a healthy, sustainable note?. Before checking out the Vancouver Canucks’ training camp at the nearby Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre recently, I ventured off the beaten path to Fern Cafe and Bakery. Located on the edge of artsy Fernwood, Victoria’s only 100% vegan cafe and bakery opened in 2018."
"First and foremost, let’s start off with my favorite café, Fern Café and Bakery. Serving up organic award-winning coffee from Fresh Cup Roastery Café, this newcomer just opened up shop a couple of weeks ago. In that short amount of time, the local community has embraced Victoria’s first all-vegan café with open arms."
"It's not often you find a fully vegan bakery with gluten-free options, but Fern Cafe is just that. Offering such delights as this Black Forest cake and mint macaron, the surroundings are cool, casual and relaxed. You can either stop by for lunch (try the burgers and sandwiches) or grab a treat (or several) to go."
"A post shared by Mr.F (@oscar_foca) on Nov 6, 2018 at 6:09pm PST. After encountering the Royal BC Museum’s majestic woolly mammoths, saunter over to Noodlebox to fill up on Southeast Asian street food. Noodlebox is able to accommodate those with dietary restrictions by substituting ingredients in their delicious dishes for their customers."
"Quick and funky, the Noodle Box is a great place to get filled up without emptying your wallet. The pan-Asian menu starts out with comforting favorites like spring rolls and fried dumplings. Soups, curries and stir-fries make up the remainder of the menu."
"A taste of East Africa located in Esquimalt; Blue Nile offers plenty of flavourful vegan dishes and meat dishes alike. One can choose from a selection of vegan dishes from the buffet ($14.95), or enjoy vegetarian menu items (all of which are vegan) including the Vegetarian Combo (a mix of lentils, cabbage, and vegetables $10.95), Bursen Tumtumo ($10.95), Ater Tumtumo ($10.95), and Hamli Zebhi ($10.95). "Owner Brett Black’s travels through Mexico inspire the incredible array of paletas (or popsicles) that loyal fans flock to purchase every day. Now relocated in Fan Tan Alley from Fisgard Street, the store specializes in small batch, made from scratch, locally sourced paletas and ice creams. The milk used is organic from Avalon dairy and their delicious products are packed in wrappers made from natural plant-based sustainable resources that are 100% biodegradable & compostable."
"In the heart of Victoria’s Chinatown, tucked down Canada’s narrowest street, discover this small-batch ice cream shop. Packing big flavour, Kid Sister Ice Cream is a must-try, from-scratch, ice cream and popsicle joint. With flavours that alternate almost daily, you can try something new each visit!"
